22 Oct Half Head vs Full Head Foils: Which Do You Actually Need?
If you’ve ever looked at a salon booking menu and wondered whether you need a half head or full head of foils, you’re certainly not the only one.
The names make the choice sound straightforward: half as many foils versus a whole head of them.
In reality, there’s a little more to it.
Choosing between half-head and full-head foils depends on your existing colour, where you want brightness, how you wear your hair and what you’re ultimately trying to achieve.
At SOLO Hair Design in Queenstown, Master Stylist Brenda Bygate approaches foils as part of an overall blonde design—not simply a quantity to put into your hair.
Here’s how to understand the difference.
What Are Foils Actually Doing?
Foiling allows selected sections of your hair to be lightened separately from the surrounding hair.
The magic isn’t simply in the foil.
It’s in which pieces Brenda selects, how finely they’re woven, how closely they’re placed and where the brightness is concentrated.
Very fine foils can produce a beautifully blended result, while different placement can create more obvious dimension and contrast.
That’s why two people can both have a “half head of foils” and leave with quite different-looking blondes.
What Is a Half Head of Foils?
A half head generally concentrates the highlighting through the upper and most visible areas of your hair.
This can make it particularly useful for maintaining an existing blonde.
If the underneath of your hair is already where you want it, there may be little reason to lighten all of it again at every appointment.
Instead, we can concentrate on the areas doing the most visual work.
A half head may suit you if:
- you’re maintaining an established blonde;
- you want more brightness through the top;
- your face-framing blonde needs refreshing;
- you want dimension rather than maximum overall lightness;
- the underneath sections don’t currently need additional lightening.
It’s also worth remembering that half head doesn’t mean half the result.
Strategic placement around the hairline, parting and visible sections can create a significant visual change.
What Is a Full Head of Foils?
A full head extends the highlighting throughout substantially more of the hair, including underneath sections.
This can make it more appropriate when you’re trying to achieve considerably more overall lightness.
A full head may be appropriate if:
- you’re making a larger move towards blonde;
- your underneath sections are significantly darker;
- you wear your hair up regularly;
- you want blonde distributed throughout the hair;
- it’s been some time since your previous full-head service;
- your existing blonde needs a more comprehensive refresh.
For the right client, a full head can create a beautiful transformation.
But that doesn’t mean everyone who wants to be blonde needs a full head at every appointment.
Which Looks Blonder?
Usually, a full head gives us the ability to distribute more blonde throughout your hair.
But perceived brightness is also strongly influenced by placement.
Adding carefully positioned blonde around your face and through your parting can sometimes make your overall colour appear significantly brighter without lightening every possible section.
This is one of the reasons professional blonding isn’t simply about putting in as many foils as possible.
More bleach isn’t the objective. A better blonde is.
What If I Wear My Hair Up?
This is something worth telling Brenda during your consultation.
If you regularly wear ponytails, buns or upstyles, areas underneath your hair become much more visible.
Someone who almost always wears their hair down may have very different priorities.
This is exactly why your lifestyle matters when we design your colour.
Do Full-Head Foils Damage Your Hair More?
Lightening is a chemical process, so the condition of your hair always matters.
Rather than treating a full head as inherently “good” or “bad”, Brenda considers what has previously been lightened, the condition of your hair and where new lightening is actually required.
Repeatedly overlapping lightener onto already-lightened hair isn’t our objective.
Healthy-looking blonde requires restraint as well as technique.
At SOLO, maintaining the integrity of your hair is part of creating the colour.
Do I Need a Toner After Foils?
Yes. At SOLO Hair Design, our highlighting and foiling services require an appropriate toner.
Lightening reveals underlying warmth in the hair.
Toning allows Brenda to refine the result and move the blonde towards the intended direction—whether that’s creamy, beige, neutral, cooler or warmer.
Think of the foils as creating the lightness.
The toner helps us create the blonde.
Can I Alternate Half and Full Heads?
For many established blonde clients, this can form part of a sensible maintenance strategy.
You may not need every section of your hair lightened at every appointment.
A larger blonde service can establish the overall colour, while subsequent appointments concentrate on the areas that genuinely need refreshing.
There isn’t one universal schedule, however.
Hair growth, your desired blonde, natural base colour and condition all influence how Brenda recommends maintaining it.
What If I’m Still Not Sure Which One to Book?
Then don’t worry about the terminology.
Show us the blonde you want.
Reference photographs are extremely useful because they tell Brenda far more about your goal than whether you’ve selected “half head” or “full head” from a menu.
We can assess your existing colour and determine what is actually required to move you towards it.
The Right Foils for Your Blonde
A beautiful blonde isn’t measured by how many foils went into creating it.
It’s measured by the finished result.
At SOLO Hair Design, Brenda combines more than 32 years of international hairdressing experience with an individual approach to blonde colour.
Whether your next appointment requires a strategic half head, a brighter full head or a combination of techniques, the goal remains the same:
beautiful blonde hair designed around you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between half-head and full-head foils?
Half-head foils concentrate highlights through the upper and most visible areas of the hair, while full-head foils distribute highlights more extensively, including underneath sections.
Will a full head of foils make me much blonder?
A full head generally allows more blonde to be distributed throughout the hair, but the finished brightness also depends on foil placement, your starting colour, toner and existing blonde.
Can I have a half head if I am already blonde?
Yes. A half head can be particularly useful for refreshing an established blonde when the underneath sections don’t require additional lightening.
Do I need full-head foils every appointment?
Not necessarily. Some clients alternate larger and smaller highlighting services depending on regrowth, existing colour and the areas requiring refreshing.
Do foils include toner at SOLO Hair Design?
Highlighting and foiling services at SOLO require an appropriate toner to refine the colour following lightening.
What should I book if I’m unsure?
If you’re planning a significant change or aren’t sure which service is appropriate, contact SOLO Hair Design for guidance or a consultation. Reference photographs of the result you want are particularly helpful.
